Strike threat in support of colleague at Sutton Borough landfill site
Paul Scott 55, of Carshalton, Surrey was sacked after being spotted by a manager, smoking an electronic cigarette at the waste facility he has worked at for 7 years.
The trade union UNITE have accused his employer Viridor of wrongful sacking and are making a claim for unfair dismissal as well as formally consulting with union members to take supportive action, possibly affecting the bin collection in the area in the run up to Christmas.
Viridor's company policy on e-cigarettes was a new one and had not been communicated to staff. This has sparked a wave of support for Mr Scott who was using the electronic cigarette in his bid to quit smoking.
We fully support Mr Scott in his efforts to be reinstated and hope that Viridor see sense before his union take the case to employment tribunal.
